 Marketing News and Tips

* Great article from Mashable on Social Media Marketing Highlights of 2011. It is interesting to see that according to them not much as changed. However, given that the iphone is now used in more and more marketing campagnes, I would have to disasgree with them. check out the blog by Lee Ooden regarding iphone apps and online marketing. * Marketing your business today is like a juggling act. Ads online and on paper, newsletters, promotions, SEO of websites/blogs it can all drive a small business owner crazy. The key in all of this is organization. Put together an outline of your small business including the various ways you promote yourself and your business. Note, which effort is productive and which is not. Perhaps you need someone to assist you, as you cannot do everything. So delegate areas you either don’t have time for or just don’t do well to others who have the expertise to do so.

It is also important to keep current on the latest in marketing. Check out this article/slideshow on “16 “Must Try” Marketing Tips – http://tinyurl.com/yz6gq8t

Yellow file folder overflowing  NEWSLETTERS - ONLINE OR PAPER?--  How can you expand your customer base without breaking the bank?  Why not publish a company newsletter? In doing so you can educate your customers or potential customers on your business and the various departments or items of interest and create good will and the valuable "word of mouth" recommendations that is valuable to all businesses.
Not sure what to write, have your employees contribute an article or piece on their area of expertise in your company. Add photos, perhaps a quiz and definitely coupons or notices of upcoming promotions or sales.
The next question is, do you want to publish your newsletter online or via paper? Yes, promotion online can be cheaper, but are you connecting with the customers you need to connect to? As wonderful as the online world of web is and as creative as social networking can be, there is really no excuse, especially if you are a small business not to publish paper newsletter as well. Reading lots of verbiage online strains the eyes of many people and frankly, many newsletters which are sent only are usually scanned and not read. People still like to hold a piece of paper in their hands and read, at their leisure the latest news or better than than your newsletter.
How to set up a newsletter? There are many free templates available online or just make one up yourself. Think of writing to friends and sharing the joys and almost joys of your business with them. Customers who return again and again  are usually ones in which you have made not only a financial connection, but a personal connection as well.
(Have too many pots on the fire and don't have time to put together a newsletter? A copywriter can help you create a newsletter that will make people want to receive eagerly each month. Give it a try, Alot of business do, and have seen a substantial increase in their customers. Why not you?

Yellow file folder overflowingABOUT BELSAN MEDIA

Long ago and many years ago there was a woman with a gift, a gift of words. Certainly, she could speak well and clearly, but she preferred using the written word as she discovered that many times people reacted positively to what she wrote and acted upon her advice. So she became a writer, writing articles for various publications, promotional material for a 4-star hotel, newsletters for various groups and a news editor for a regional magazine. This was great, she decided, but she wanted to learn more and help a wider variety of customers, so she opened her own business, Belsan Media and launched herself into the world of Commercial Copywriting.

So begins the story of Belsan Media, Commercial Copywriting.  As owner and copywriter of Belsan Media, many times I am asked, "What exactly is a copywriter?"

A copywriter is a wordsmith.  As a copywriter, my job is promote assist you in expanding your customer base through clear readable copy that entices the reader to act in a positive manner to your organization. To make, for example, your company's newsletter, website, blog or even product description --- sparkle with words that entice readers to come back to your site again and again.

Zuñi Jewelry – A brief history

The Zuñi People of North American live in Zuni (Pueblo), New Mexico, about 35 miles south of Gallup. They have lived in that area for over 1000 years. The Zuñis, like the Navajo, originally used Mexican and American silver dollars for their source of silver which they used in making jewelry, concho belts and other various ornamentations.

What is unique about Zuñi jewelry designers is that when designing, let’s say a necklace (see the Ronnie Calavraza set below) they will carefully begin their design work at the boundaries of their design. Once that is done the designer will begin to work toward the center of the design. If you look closely you will notice that Zuñi jewelry reflects their preference of silver work over multiple turquoise settings.

In the Zuñi culture birds are believed to be the messengers between the earth and the sacred sky beings. Below are two lovely example of “centering,” showing the Zuñi preference for working a design from the outside in. Notice how the eye is drawn from the outer edges of each piece inward to the inlaid design.

The Power of the Web - (from  http://belsanmedia.wordpress.com/)
If you have ever doubted the power of iphones, websites, tweets and blogs, don’t. What is happening now (or what has happened) in Iran regarding the recent election results is galvanizing many within the cyber-community to help bring about change. Whether it will work or not, is not really pertinent. What is amazing to me is how computer hackers/wizards/just plain folk have taken to heart the plight of the Iranian people and their fight for a fair election. This, I believe is the first time the power of the web is being used to help people, a nation, help themselves..........

An Insider’s view – Skijoring

From Alaska to Kentucky there is a new sport gaining widespread popularity.  It is a combination of mushing (think dog sleds) and Nordic skiing (it is a very popular sport in Alaska and is increasing in enthusiasts around the country for it can be done on snow or dirt. When it is done on snow, it is called skijoring, when it is done without snow (using a special type of cart or scooter it is called appropriately enough, carting or scootering.

I asked Megan Capon, Washingtonian and Skijoring enthusiast and web host of “waskijor@yahoogroups.com” to explain this unique sport to me.

How did you first hear about Skijoring?
I don’t know really, probably surfing the net or from my uncle who got me started with dogs (he lives on the Oregon coast and runs the dunes, so I had to learn the SKI part of skijoring myself).

What made you decide to learn Skijoring?
When we moved up to Clem Elum it was natural to cross-country ski. We later acquired an adult dog and a puppy.  I pretty much started training them as soon as the pup was big enough and it just went from there.

What dogs to you use for Skijoring?
I started with an adult lab/German Shorthaired pointer mix, we’ve since acquired three purebred field German Shorthaired Pointers.  They are ideal – strong, fast, hard workers, very tolerant of the high temperatures we have here in Washington, and are easily recalled in case I have to turn them loose in icy/steep conditions......

GHOSTWRITING

The Artistic Spirit of the Entrepreneur

Leonardo da Vinci, artist, scientist, engineer, Renaissance man. He was a man of great curiosity and artistry. Yet today, we would also label Leonardo da Vinci an entrepreneur. Throughout his career Leonardo da Vinci's artistic and engineering genius was supported by various individuals ranging from the Duke of Milan to Francis I, the King of France.

To understand how we can learn entrepreneurship from Leonardo da Vinci, I’ve listed below the five attributes that were keys in his development.

 VISION
Why does the eye see a thing more clearly in dreams than the imagination when awake?  - Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo da Vinci was obsessed with combining his vision to reality. He was commissioned to paint a portrait or fresco, yet completed only about 20 paintings in his lifetime as he was seldom satisfied with his work.

Entrepreneurs are visionaries as well. They see business opportunities others overlook.  Successful entrepreneurs flow with the prevailing business climate and make adjustments when necessary.

FAITH
Where the spirit does not work with the hand there is no art. – Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo studied various aspects of nature, the design and pattern of all manner of people and animals. He was a keen observer and placed his faith in his observations which he wrote down in his journals.

An entrepreneur must believe in himself and his ability to take hold of an idea and have enough faith in himself to bring it into fruition. Life experiences and education are also a part of what the entrepreneur brings to the table. The key, which Leonard da Vinci had a difficult time in doing, is to accept limitations and if possible, work around them...............
